About the Department

Civil Engineering is a Professional Engineering discipline and it is the Mother branch of Engineering that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings.It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Materials Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Surveying, and Construction Engineering.

The principle educational objective of our department is to provide the students with fundamental and high tech knowledge and the skills needed to resolve the problems related to construction and maintenance of infrastructure in harmony with the society and environment.

VISION

To build young Technocrats by imparting their technical knowledge in the field of Civil Engineering, by laying the foundation for future engineers, who can meet the demands of industry and community effectively in all part of civil works and to make significant contribution in the economic development of the state, region and nation.

MISSION

  • To adopt valuable teaching methods and implement high quality education to maximize Engineering knowledge for students.
  • To promote innovative and original thoughts in the minds of civil engineers.
  • To provide facilities to the students and faculty members to enhance the understanding and implementation of recent trends in the Civil Engineering field.
  • To produce Civil Engineering graduates with good ethical skills and managerial skills to become as successful professionals and entrepreneurs.
  • To promote advanced technology, Industry Institute interaction, research and consultancy in Civil Engineering department with global linkages.

Programme Educational Objectives(PEO)

  • To educate the graduates with the basic and advanced knowledge in civil engineering and to apply the fundamentals of mathematics, science, management and computing in engineering principles.
  • To motivate themselves in getting engineering position and practice with structural design, construction industries in private and government sectors at the national and international levels.
  • To succeed and prepare the civil engineering graduates in lifelong independent learning and work effectively on team based projects to become good entrepreneurs and conduct themselves ethically, socially in their professional environment.

  • Engineering knowledge:
    Able to apply the knowledge of Mathematics, Science, Engineering fundamentals and an Engineering specialization to the solution of complex Engineering problems.
  • Problem Analysis:
    Able to identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex Engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of Mathematics, Natural sciences, and Engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions:
    Able to design solution for complex Engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate considerations for the public health and safety and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems:
    Able to use Research – based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern tool usage:
    Able to create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern Engineering IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex Engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • The engineer and society
    Able to apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to access societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional Engineering practice.

    Able to understand the impact of the professional Engineering solutions in societal and environmental context, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO)

  • Draft specification: Select material, prepare estimates/costing, schedule work plans.
  • Experimentation: Apply knowledge of different fields of Civil Engineering, conduct experiments, analyze, interpret data, design the system components.
  • Project inception and design : Conceptualize projects related to different fields of Civil Engineering, collect relevant data by direct and indirect methods, analyze the project requirement and design the project

HOD Profile

DR.M.MAGESWARI, M.E, Ph.D

Professor and Head of the Department in CIVIL Engineering

She has more than 20 years of teaching experience in which she has international experience worked as an Assistant Professor in INTI University, Malaysia and 10 Years research experience. Her major research interests are Concrete technology, Irrigation Engineering, Repair and Re-habitation and Ground Improvement Technique and Innovative techniques using byproducts in concrete applications.

She has received B.E degree in Civil and Structural Engineering from Annamalai University, Chidambaram, M.E degree in Irrigation and Water Management from Anna University and Ph.D (Civil & Structural) from Annamalai University, Chidambaram.

She has published several research articles in National & International(13) and Presented papers in International Conferences(9) and also applied Three Patents(3).

She has applied funded projects worth of 10 Lakhs under Technology System Development (TSD) Programme in Department of Science and Technology (DST) , Government of India.

She is a life member of ISTE and member of International Association of Hydrological Sciences. She is an Expert Panel Member of Board of Studies in Anna University and Expert Chairperson for Women Welfare Committee at institution level. She has organized several national and International Conferences, Workshops, Guest Lecture and Symposium.
